Suppose you could see any three numbers in your business, updated as things happen, on your phone. Only three.
The limit is the point. Ask for a dashboard and you get forty figures, which is the same as none, because nobody reads forty numbers every morning and within two weeks nobody opens it at all.
Three numbers get looked at. For years.
What usually survives the cut
Owners who do this exercise honestly tend to land in the same territory.
Money coming in: what has actually been collected this month, against what was expected.
Work coming in: enquiries this month, and how many turned into something.
Work going out: what is due to be delivered this week and what is already late.
Notice none of these is profit. Profit is a monthly number and it is the accountant's job. These three are daily numbers, and they are the ones that tell you early whether this month is going to be a good one, while there is still time to change it.
Why choosing matters more than building
Because a number you check daily changes your behaviour, and a number you check annually just informs you.
The owner who sees outstanding collection every morning chases differently, without deciding to. The one who sees it at month end reacts, once, after the fact.
That is the whole value, and it comes from choosing well rather than from measuring everything. Most businesses would be better off with three good numbers than with the report they currently do not read.
Pick your three. Not five, three. Which would you want on your phone tomorrow morning?
Choosing the three numbers worth watching, and then making them appear without anybody preparing them, is work we have done for a lot of owners. Tell us your three.
