What is stopping you growing faster, and is it really that?

What is stopping you growing faster, and is it really that?

Most businesses are held back by one thing at a time. Improving anything else, however well, changes nothing until that one thing moves.

At any moment a business is limited by one thing. Not five.

That is an uncomfortable idea because it means four of the things you are working on are not going to change your results. They may be worth doing. They will not move the number.

How to find the one

Ask what would happen if you suddenly got twice the enquiries tomorrow.

If the answer is we could not handle them, enquiries are not your constraint. Capacity is, and spending money on marketing right now would make things worse rather than better.

If the answer is we would be delighted and we could manage, then the constraint is in front of the enquiry: how people find you, or what happens when they do.

Then ask the same question about money. If a large order arrived tomorrow, could you fund the material? If not, the constraint is collection, not sales, and the fastest way to grow is to get paid faster rather than to sell more.

Why this matters more than effort

Because effort spent anywhere except the constraint produces nothing, and it feels like work the whole time. That is the trap.

A team can spend six months improving quality, service and presentation, all genuinely better, with no change in revenue, because the constraint was that nobody follows up a quotation twice.

And when the constraint does move, it moves to somewhere else, and the question has to be asked again. That is not failure. That is what growing looks like.

If twice the work arrived tomorrow, what in your business would break first? That is your constraint.

Finding the one constraint, and resisting the urge to fix four other things first, is how we scope every project. Tell us what would break and we will tell you what we would do about it.
