Most owners have said some version of this sentence. One day I want the business to run without me.
It gets said the way people talk about losing weight. Sincerely, and without any particular plan. So it stays a feeling, and feelings do not get built.
It is worth being specific for ten minutes.
Answer it properly
Not what would you do with the time in general. What would you do on a specific Tuesday, if nothing in the office needed you.
Some owners say they would finally meet customers instead of handling paperwork. Some say they would open the second location they have talked about for three years. Some say they would be home for dinner, which is not a small answer and is often the true one.
Whatever it is, write it down in a sentence. That sentence is worth more than any plan, because it tells you what the work is actually for.
Why it usually does not happen
Not because it is hard. Because it is never urgent.
Everything that would free you up competes with everything that is on fire today, and the fire always wins. So the business stays exactly as dependent on you as it was five years ago, and the only thing that changed is that there is more of it.
The way out is unglamorous. Pick one thing that only you can currently do. Make it so somebody else can do it, by writing the rule down or putting the information where they can reach it. One thing a month. Twelve things a year.
That is genuinely the whole method. The difficulty is not the method, it is doing it while busy.
Finish this sentence honestly: if the business did not need me tomorrow, I would spend the day doing ______.
Taking one thing a month off the owner's desk is the whole method, and it is what we do. Tell us the first thing you would want to hand over.
