Open your home page and do one count.
How many sentences begin with We, or Our, or the company name. How many begin with You, or describe a situation the reader is in.
For most business websites the ratio is about eight to one, and that single number explains most of what is wrong.
Why this happens
Because the site was written by people who know the company and not the customer. Everything true about the business is available, so that is what gets written down.
Founded in 2009. A team of thirty. State of the art facility. ISO certified. Pan India presence.
All true, all possibly impressive, and none of it is what the reader came for. He came with a problem and he is scanning for evidence that you have solved his problem before.
The same information, pointed differently
You do not have to remove the facts. Turn them around so they answer his question instead of announcing yours.
A team of thirty becomes your work does not stop because one person is on leave.
Fifteen years in business becomes we have seen the problem you are describing many times.
State of the art facility becomes the specific thing that facility lets you do for him that others cannot.
Same information. Now it is about him, and he keeps reading, which is the only thing a home page has to achieve.
The quickest test
Read your first paragraph out loud as if you were saying it to a customer across a table. If you would never speak that way to a person, do not write that way to one.
Count the We sentences against the You sentences on your home page. What is your ratio?
Turning a page of company facts into something written for the reader is usually a day of work and the single biggest change we make. Send us your home page and we will show you the ratio.
